9 Kings

9 Kings is a compact strategy game about building a kingdom on a handful of tiles and watching it survive attacks from rival rulers. Sad Socket mixes card drafting, city placement, and automatic battles into runs that move quickly but leave plenty to think about afterward. It is a natural fit for PC players who like experimenting with unusual builds. Its small footprint also makes the Windows version appealing to Android users curious about Winlator, although the tiny interface deserves consideration on a phone screen.

Nine Rulers, One Crowded Kingdom

There is no scripted campaign in the usual sense. You choose a king, begin with a small capital, and try to outlast the other rulers. Each king has a distinct deck of troops, buildings, and spells, so your starting choice shapes the first few years of a run. The world is told through these rival factions: one ruler may bring a swarm of expendable bodies, while another relies on a few heavily strengthened units. Their attacks make the politics of this little kingdom immediately practical.

The interesting story is the one a run generates. A weak border can become your strongest defense after an unexpected card reward; a comfortable army can collapse when a rival arrives with a counter to its main trick. Defeating an attacker can open access to cards from that ruler’s deck, so enemies become a source of new strategies as well as threats. Quest and Endless modes extend that premise in different directions, but the central appeal is always the same: build a realm with the cards you receive, then see what it can withstand.

Card Combos and Automatic Battles

Each turn gives you a small number of choices with lasting consequences. Place a barracks, add another unit, strengthen a building by stacking a matching card, or spend space on an effect that improves its neighbours. The grid is deliberately tight. A powerful card in the wrong position may contribute less than a modest one placed beside the right support building. That spatial puzzle separates 9 Kings from deckbuilders where the order of cards matters more than the map itself.

When the enemy attacks, armies fight automatically. Your job is to prepare a formation and a set of effects that make the outcome likely, then watch the plan work or fail in seconds. Certain combinations can multiply into absurd numbers of units or damage, and finding one feels like cracking a puzzle. Yet the game does not hand you every piece you want. Sometimes a promising deck cannot find its key card, and you have to make a weaker synergy work. That mix of planning and improvisation keeps short runs from feeling identical.

The Pleasure of Watching a Plan Break

The best moment in 9 Kings is a battle you expected to lose that ends with your last surviving unit clearing the field. The pixel art keeps a crowded board readable, and the pace makes it tempting to try one more opening immediately after a defeat. There is also a real weakness beneath the charm: once a combination becomes overwhelming, some fights play out more like confirmation than a challenge. The restricted board and random rewards can be frustrating when your preferred strategy never appears. Players who enjoy finding new solutions within tight limits are likely to forgive that. Players looking for direct control of every soldier should know the combat is largely automatic.

PC and Android/Winlator Requirements

Platform Level CPU / Chipset GPU RAM OS / Environment
PC Minimum Intel Core i5-750 / AMD Phenom II X4 965 GeForce GT 630 2 GB / Radeon HD 6670 2 GB 4 GB Windows 10, 64-bit; DirectX 11
PC Recommended Intel Core i5-3570 / AMD FX-8300 GeForce GTX 650 2 GB / Radeon HD 7750 2 GB 8 GB Windows 10, 64-bit; DirectX 12
Android / Winlator Suggested minimum Snapdragon 730G / MediaTek Helio G95 Adreno 618 / Mali-G76 6 GB Android 10+ / compatible Winlator build
Android / Winlator Suggested recommended Snapdragon 870 / MediaTek Dimensity 8100 Adreno 650 / Mali-G610 8 GB Android 11+ / compatible Winlator build

The PC specifications come from the game’s store listing. The Android suggestions are estimates for running the Windows build, not official support tiers. A minimum-spec PC should target around 30–60 FPS at 720p, while the recommended tier should aim for 60 FPS at 1080p. On Winlator, treat 30 FPS at 720p as a starting target for a Snapdragon 730G-class phone and 60 FPS at 720p as a possible target for a Snapdragon 870-class device. No controlled benchmark confirms those phone figures for this build, and huge late-game armies can cause dips even when early turns feel smooth. Lower resolution before sacrificing the clarity of the board, and remember that touch controls may be a larger obstacle than raw speed.

9 Kings Review Video

Is 9 Kings Worth Playing?

9 Kings turns a small board into a surprisingly rich strategy problem. Its strongest ideas are easy to grasp but difficult to exhaust: place cards well, borrow strength from defeated rulers, and accept that a clever plan may still need to change. PC is the more comfortable place to read the board and manage rapid decisions. Android through Winlator offers a portable way to explore the same builds if your device handles the Windows version and the interface remains legible. For players who like short, replayable strategy sessions, that is a compelling trade.
