Assassin’s Creed Rogue
Assassin’s Creed Rogue asks what happens when an Assassin decides his order is causing the harm it claims to prevent. Ubisoft Sofia’s 2015 PC game follows Shay Patrick Cormac from the Brotherhood to the Templars across cold North Atlantic waters, New York, and the River Valley. It builds on Black Flag’s ship combat but gives the voyage a different moral direction. Windows players get an accessible open world; Android players may try the original PC build through Winlator on hardware prepared for sea effects and busy city scenes.
Shay Cormac Changes Sides
Shay begins as an Assassin during the Seven Years’ War, taking orders while he learns the Brotherhood’s work. A disastrous search for a powerful artefact forces him to question the price of that mission. His break with the order is not a simple change of costume. Former allies become pursuers, and people he once called enemies offer him another way to justify his actions. The premise gives Rogue a hook that the broader series rarely uses: its protagonist knows Assassin methods because he once trusted them.
The story carries Shay through colonial New York and into regions shaped by war and harsh weather. Familiar figures connect it to Assassin’s Creed III and Unity, but his decision remains understandable without knowing every cameo. The campaign is shorter than Black Flag’s, which keeps the central conflict in view but gives some relationships less time to develop. Rogue works best when it lets Shay’s old loyalties complicate a mission, rather than assuming the Templar perspective alone makes every familiar activity new.
Hunting the Hunters
On foot, Shay climbs buildings, infiltrates guarded areas, and fights with the series’ familiar counter-based rhythm. The reversal appears in the threat around him: Assassins may hide among civilians, strike from cover, and use the same tricks players learned in earlier entries. Staying alert to whispers and movement can matter as much as watching a guard’s route. Shay’s air rifle provides a quiet way to control distance, with different ammunition supporting a stealthy or more aggressive approach.
At sea, the Morrigan is a smaller, quicker ship than Edward’s Jackdaw. Ice floes, narrow waterways, and colder weather change how naval encounters feel, while upgrades reward players who keep exploring. Ship battles and boarding are familiar to Black Flag veterans, and that familiarity is both a strength and a limitation. The world is enjoyable to sail, but Rogue seldom reinvents its predecessor’s systems. Its best addition is context: hunting an Assassin aboard a ship you helped seize carries a different tension from chasing a pirate prize.
A Colder Assassin’s Creed
The visual shift matters. Breaking through ice and watching a dark sea beneath a pale sky gives Rogue a mood distinct from Black Flag’s warm Caribbean. Shay can feel more pragmatic than charming, which suits the premise but makes some scenes less lively. The shorter story can be finished without the open world’s scale becoming exhausting, though completionists will still find plenty of places to clear. PC players can take advantage of a larger display for naval navigation. On Android through Winlator, stable camera movement is important when both waves and enemies are crossing the screen.
PC and Android/Winlator Requirements
| Platform | Level | CPU / Chipset | GPU | RAM | OS / Environment |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| PC | Minimum | Core 2 Quad Q6600 / Athlon II X4 620 | GeForce GTS 450 / Radeon HD 5670 / Intel HD 4600 | 2 GB | Windows 10, 64-bit; DirectX 11 |
| PC | Recommended | Core i5-2400S / AMD FX-6100 | GeForce GTX 560 Ti / Radeon HD 6870 | 4 GB suggested | Windows 10, 64-bit; DirectX 11 |
| Android / Winlator | Suggested minimum | Snapdragon 870 / MediaTek Dimensity 1200 | Adreno 650 / Mali-G77 | 8 GB | Android 11+ / compatible Winlator build |
| Android / Winlator | Suggested recommended | Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 / MediaTek Dimensity 9200 | Adreno 740 / Immortalis-G715 | 12 GB | Android 13+ / compatible Winlator build |
Ubisoft publishes the PC minimum and most of the recommended tier; its recommended RAM is not specified, so 4 GB here is a suggestion. Android rows are estimates. A minimum PC should start at 720p and aim for 30–60 FPS, while the recommended tier may target 60 FPS at 1080p with moderate settings. On Winlator, 30 FPS at 720p is a cautious goal for a Snapdragon 870-class phone; an 8 Gen 2-class device may have room to aim for 45–60 FPS. These are planning estimates, not measured results for this copy. Ice effects, smoke, and crowded naval battles can cause dips. Reduce shadows and water detail first if they do.

Final Verdict
Assassin’s Creed Rogue makes the familiar Assassin toolkit feel less secure by turning it against Shay. Its moral reversal and icy naval world are enough to distinguish it from Black Flag, even when the ship systems clearly share a foundation. PC is an easy place to follow its shorter campaign; Winlator is a possible Android route on capable devices. Play it for Shay’s change of allegiance and the thrill of being the person an Assassin must now fear.
