FIFA 20

FIFA 20 brought street football back. VOLTA Football is a full mode built around small-sided games in cages, futsal courts and rooftop pitches from Amsterdam to Tokyo, with a create-a-player system, a short story campaign and squads of three to five a side. It is the closest EA has come to reviving FIFA Street, and it exists alongside a serious rebalancing of the eleven-a-side game under the banner of Football Intelligence. At 53 GB on DirectX 11 this is the largest install in the series so far on this site, and it needs a capable PC or a high-end Android device to run properly through Winlator.

VOLTA and a Career Mode With Opinions

VOLTA is a genuine mode rather than a side attraction. You build a player, choose their style and clothing, and work through a campaign of small-sided matches with different rule sets — some with walls, some without, some with no goalkeepers. The reduced player count changes everything: there is nowhere to hide, skill moves matter far more, and a single mistake concedes immediately. It is fast, stylish and a real break from the main game, though the campaign is short and the mode was thinner than fans of FIFA Street had hoped.

Career mode also received its most meaningful update in years. Press conferences arrived, with questions about upcoming fixtures, individual players and your own position, and the answers you give affect squad morale — publicly backing a struggling striker can lift him, or publicly criticising him can do the opposite. Player morale became a tracked value influencing form. Ultimate Team continued as ever, with a season pass structure layered on top of the same pack economy that draws consistent criticism.

Football Intelligence and Composed Finishing

The eleven-a-side game was rebalanced around ball physics. The ball itself now behaves more independently, with real drag and spin, so passes and shots travel with weight and a deflection genuinely changes a move. Composed finishing rewrote how strikers approach one-on-ones, taking body position and balance into account so a rushed finish under pressure misses in ways that look right.

Defending was strengthened again — the AI holds position rather than chasing, one-on-one defending relies on jockeying and timing, and manual tackling is more effective than the previous two entries allowed. Set pieces got a rebuilt free-kick system with a spin-control indicator that offers more precision than FIFA 19’s. The honest criticisms are two. First, goalkeepers in FIFA 20 were widely regarded as the worst in the modern series, conceding shots that should never go in, and it took several patches to bring them to an acceptable level. Second, Career mode shipped with a well-documented set of bugs around AI transfer logic and squad selection. Both were largely addressed by later updates, but they defined the game’s reception at launch.

What It Feels Like to Play

The eleven-a-side game is slower and more deliberate than FIFA 18 or 19, with the ball feeling like a physical object rather than something magnetised to feet. Building an attack takes work again. VOLTA is the change of pace that keeps the package interesting — twenty minutes of three-a-side on a Tokyo rooftop is a completely different game from a Premier League fixture. The presentation remains the series’ strongest asset. Through Winlator this is a demanding install and a demanding runtime, so treat a strong flagship as the entry point rather than the ideal.

System Requirements and Performance

Platform Spec Level CPU / Processor GPU / Graphics RAM OS / Environment
PC (Desktop) Minimum Intel Core i3-6100 / AMD Athlon X4 880K NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 / AMD Radeon R7 260 (2 GB) 8 GB Windows 7 / 8.1 / 10 (64-bit)
PC (Desktop) Recommended Intel Core i5-3550 / AMD FX-8150 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670 / AMD Radeon R9 270X (2 GB) 8 GB Windows 10 / 11 (64-bit)
Android / Winlator Minimum Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 / MediaTek Dimensity 9000 Adreno 730 / Mali-G710 8 GB Android 12+ / Winlator 7.1+
Android / Winlator Recommended Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 / Dimensity 9300 Adreno 750 / Immortalis-G720 12 GB Android 14+ / Winlator 7.1+

The published requirements have barely moved since FIFA 18, but the reality is heavier — the install grew to 53 GB and the added content raises memory pressure considerably. Desktop systems with a GTX 670-class card still reach 60 FPS at 1080p on high, though 8 GB of system RAM is a genuine floor rather than a suggestion. Under Winlator with DXVK and Turnip, a current flagship holds 45–60 FPS at reduced settings, and mid-range devices struggle. VOLTA runs considerably better than the full stadium game because there are fewer players and no crowd to render, so if performance is marginal, that mode remains comfortable. Storage is the real barrier on a phone.

FIFA 20 Video Review

Is It Worth Playing?

FIFA 20 is a bolder release than its reputation suggests. VOLTA is a proper mode with its own identity, Football Intelligence made the ball behave like a physical object, and press conferences gave Career mode a voice it never had. It launched with poor goalkeepers and a buggy Career mode, both of which coloured the reception and were only fixed later. If you want street football alongside your league football and have the storage and hardware for a 53 GB install, it is worth it — but on Android through Winlator, FIFA 19 remains the more sensible target unless you specifically want VOLTA.
