Red Dead Redemption

Red Dead Redemption finally reached PC in late 2024, fourteen years after Rockstar released it on consoles and left Windows out. Double Eleven handled the port, building on the version they had already brought to modern platforms, and it runs on DirectX 11 at a comparatively modest 8.41 GB. This is not a remake — the 2010 game is intact, art and all — but it is the first time John Marston’s story has been playable natively on a PC, and at this size it is a realistic proposition on Android through Winlator too. Undead Nightmare is included.

The End of the Outlaw West

It’s 1911, and the frontier is closing. John Marston has left the Van der Linde gang behind for a wife, a son and a farm, and the Bureau of Investigation has taken all three from him as leverage. Agent Ross gives him a simple deal: hunt down and kill the men he used to ride with — Bill Williamson first, then Javier Escuella and Dutch — and he gets his family back. Marston knows what kind of promise that is and takes it anyway, because refusing costs more.

The journey runs from the scrubland of New Austin south into Nuevo Paraíso, where a Mexican revolution is being fought by people who care nothing for his problems, and then north to the greener, more settled West Elizabeth. Every region shows the same thing from a different angle: the old world of outlaws being replaced by government, railways and paperwork, and nobody in charge coming out looking good. The writing is Rockstar’s best-restrained work — Marston is dry rather than witty, the supporting cast are memorable without being cartoons, and the final stretch is one of the few endings in the medium that people still argue about respectfully. Undead Nightmare, the zombie expansion, throws all of that out for horror comedy and is excellent on its own terms.

Dead Eye and the Road Between Towns

Combat is built around Dead Eye, a slow-motion state that lets you paint targets and fire on them at once. It upgrades across the game — first automatic marking, later fully manual painting — and it is generous enough that gunfights feel cinematic rather than punishing. Everything else is the era’s third-person cover shooting, and it shows a little: sticky cover, enemies that soak more revolver rounds than they should.

The world does the heavy lifting. Horses have real weight and stamina, and the ride between missions is where the game actually lives — the weather turning, a stranger flagging you down, a wagon being robbed a mile off the road. Hunting, poker, five finger fillet, bounty contracts and the honour system fill the gaps without a checklist screen shoving them at you. The honest criticisms have not gone away: the middle stretch in Mexico drags, mission design is strictly scripted and fails you for improvising, and the port itself is a straight conversion rather than a restoration, with textures and character models that clearly predate Red Dead Redemption 2. There is no multiplayer component in this version either.

What It Feels Like to Play

Slow, in the way the game intends. Long rides, sparse conversation, and sudden violence that ends quickly. On a phone it works better than expected because the pacing suits short sessions — one mission, one ride home, done. A gamepad is close to essential for horseback aiming. What the PC port adds over the original is stability and resolution rather than new content, and that is enough.

System Requirements and Performance

Platform Spec Level CPU / Processor GPU / Graphics RAM OS / Environment
PC (Desktop) Minimum Intel Core i5-4670 / AMD FX-9590 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 / AMD Radeon R7 360 (2 GB) 8 GB Windows 10 (64-bit)
PC (Desktop) Recommended Intel Core i7-8700 / AMD Ryzen 5 3600 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti / AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT (6 GB) 16 GB Windows 10 / 11 (64-bit)
Android / Winlator Minimum Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 / MediaTek Dimensity 9000 Adreno 730 / Mali-G710 8 GB Android 12+ / Winlator 7.1+
Android / Winlator Recommended Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 / Dimensity 9300 Adreno 750 / Immortalis-G720 12 GB Android 14+ / Winlator 7.1+

Because the underlying game targeted 2010 consoles, desktop requirements are light for a modern release — a GTX 1660 Ti holds well past 60 FPS at 1080p, and the port supports high frame rates and ultrawide resolutions properly. The known weak spot is towns: Armadillo and Blackwater cost noticeably more than open country, and that is a CPU-side draw call problem rather than a graphics one, so dropping resolution barely helps. Under Winlator with DXVK and the Turnip driver, a current flagship holds 30–40 FPS on the trail and dips into the mid-20s in populated settlements. Lower population density and shadow quality first — in that order — and leave texture quality alone, since it costs little here.

Red Dead Redemption Video Review

Is It Worth Playing?

Red Dead Redemption is a great game that waited an unreasonable amount of time for a PC release, and the wait produced a competent port rather than a generous one. What you are buying is the 2010 game running properly at modern resolutions and frame rates, plus Undead Nightmare, and that is genuinely worth having — the story and the world justify it without any help from a remaster. Expect visible age in the character models and a scripted mission structure that predates Red Dead Redemption 2’s flexibility. On Android through Winlator, its modest engine demands make it one of the more comfortable open-world games to actually finish.
