Resident Evil 4 Remake
Remaking Resident Evil 4 was a genuinely risky idea. The 2005 original is on most short lists of the best games ever made, and Capcom had to justify touching it. The 2023 version, built on the RE Engine with DirectX 12, does that by rebuilding rather than restoring — Leon can move while aiming, parry with his knife, and work through a Spain that is darker, wetter and considerably more hostile than the sunlit village of the original. At 54 GB it is one of the larger installs in the catalogue, and one of the heavier titles to attempt on Android through Winlator.
Six Years After Raccoon City
Leon S. Kennedy survived the Raccoon City outbreak, got recruited by the US government, and is now sent alone to a remote part of rural Spain to recover Ashley Graham, the President’s daughter. The setup is deliberately simple. What he walks into is a village whose inhabitants are not zombies but something worse — coordinated, capable of using tools and weapons, and controlled by a parasite called Las Plagas.
Behind the village stands Osmund Saddler and the Los Illuminados cult, who intend to infect Ashley and use her to reach her father. The remake takes this pulpy foundation and pushes it toward horror rather than camp. Luis Serra is a substantially better character here, given real screen time and a proper arc instead of a handful of scenes. Ada Wong’s motives are handled with more weight. Ramón Salazar and Jack Krauser both benefit from expanded material, and Krauser in particular gets a history with Leon that makes their confrontation land. The tone shift is the most divisive change: some of the original’s cheerful absurdity is gone, replaced by something closer to dread.
Parry, Crouch, Manage
Combat is rebuilt around movement. Leon aims and walks at the same time now, which sounds small and changes everything — the original’s stop-and-shoot stance created its tension, so the remake replaces that pressure with enemies who are faster, flank more aggressively, and rarely attack alone. The knife carries the new system. It parries almost anything including chainsaws, breaks grapples, and finishes downed enemies, but it has durability and it will break. Deciding when to spend that durability is the core tactical question in every fight.
Everything around it has been tightened. Crouching enables stealth kills, so approaching a farm quietly is now viable. The Merchant returns with a proper request board, weapon upgrade trees, and exclusive tickets that let you specialise a favourite gun. Resource crafting turns gunpowder and resources into ammunition, which softens the scarcity but never removes it — pushing through a chapter with eleven shotgun shells and a broken knife is a normal state of affairs. Ashley no longer has a health bar and cannot be killed by stray shots, which quietly fixes the most complained-about part of the original. The castle and island sections are shorter and better paced. The Mercenaries mode returned in a free update.
What It Feels Like to Play
This is one of the best-feeling third-person shooters in years. Weapons are loud and heavy, hit reactions are specific enough that you can shoot a limb to set up a melee kick, and the lighting does an enormous amount of work — the village at dusk and the castle interiors look superb. The parry gives fights a rhythm the original never had. It is not a perfect adaptation: the removal of the original’s sunlit opening tone loses something, and a few of the best-known set pieces are cut or shortened. Even so, this is the rare remake you would recommend over the game it is based on.
System Requirements and Performance

| Android / Winlator | Minimum | Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 / MediaTek Dimensity 9200 | Adreno 740 / Immortalis-G715 | 12 GB | Android 13+ / Winlator 7.1+ |
| Android / Winlator | Recommended | Snapdragon 8 Elite / Dimensity 9400 | Adreno 830 / Immortalis-G925 | 16 GB | Android 14+ / Winlator 7.1+ |
Capcom’s RE Engine is efficient, but this is a 2023 DirectX 12 title and translation is expensive. On desktop, an RTX 2060 holds 60 FPS at 1080p on high without ray tracing. Under Winlator the picture is much tighter: only the newest flagship silicon should attempt it, typically landing at 25 to 35 FPS on low settings at 720p upscaled. The critical setting is Texture Quality — the RE Engine lets you set a texture pool larger than available memory, and exceeding it causes hard stutters rather than a gradual slowdown, so set it low and leave it there. Mesh quality and shadow resolution are the next two worth cutting.

Final Verdict
Resident Evil 4 Remake had an impossible brief and mostly met it. The knife parry, the reworked Luis and Krauser material, the fixed Ashley escort sections and the sharper pacing all improve on a game that did not obviously need improving. What it trades away is tone, and whether that bothers you depends on what you loved about 2005. As a modern action-horror game judged on its own, it is excellent. On PC it is an easy recommendation; on Android through Winlator, it is one of the most demanding things in the library and worth attempting only on current flagship hardware.
