Legend of Kay Anniversary
Legend of Kay Anniversary is a remaster of a 2005 PlayStation 2 action-platformer that most people missed the first time around. KAIKO rebuilt the original with higher-resolution textures, redone character models and widescreen support, and THQ Nordic published it in 2015. Underneath the new coat of paint it is unapologetically a mid-2000s mascot platformer — a young cat learning kung fu, a world of anthropomorphic animals, and combat that sits somewhere between a beat ’em up and a Zelda-style adventure. At 5 GB on DirectX 9, it runs comfortably on old PCs and on Android through Winlator.
A Cat, a Sword and an Occupation
The island of Yenching has been overrun by gorillas and rats who have banned the practice of martial arts, closed the dojos and put the native cat population to work. Kay is a young cat who has been training in secret against his mother’s wishes, and when the occupiers take things too far he leaves the village to find help.
The story is straightforward and aimed squarely at a younger audience, but it commits to its setting more thoroughly than most games of its type. The world draws openly on Chinese folklore and wuxia film conventions, with dojo masters, hidden temples, a jade-obsessed antagonist and a genuine sense that martial arts tradition is something worth fighting over. Kay himself is written as cocky and a little irritating early on, which is deliberate — the arc is about him earning the confidence he already thinks he has. Supporting characters are broad, the humour is hit and miss, and the voice acting in the remaster is the same recording from 2005, which has not improved with age.
Kung Fu, Combos and Mounts
Combat is the strongest part. Kay fights with a sword, a hammer and claws, each with its own combo strings, and the system rewards mixing them rather than mashing one button. There is a block, a dodge roll, a counter, and a rage meter that builds through successful hits and unlocks stronger finishers. Enemies telegraph properly and come in enough varieties — shielded, ranged, armoured — that fights ask you to actually read them. It is more substantial than the average platformer of its era and it holds up.
Around that sits a mix of light platforming, simple environmental puzzles and collectible hunting. Kay gathers jade to buy upgrades from merchants, opening new combos and improving his weapons over the course of the game. Several sections hand you animal mounts — a boar, a bird, a fish — that change traversal for a level or two, and the game has enough variety in its environments to keep moving: bamboo forests, mining tunnels, a floating temple, a volcano. The weakest elements are the camera, which fights you in tight spaces and was not fixed for the remaster, and the platforming itself, which is imprecise enough that some jumps feel like guesswork.
What It Feels Like to Play
Legend of Kay Anniversary is a comfortable, unambitious game that does its main job well. The combat has real weight, the world has genuine character, and it runs about ten to twelve hours without overstaying its welcome. It is also very clearly a PS2 game underneath — level design is linear and gated, checkpointing is old-fashioned, and the camera regularly makes a fight harder than it should be. The remaster improves the textures and models noticeably but does not touch any of the underlying design problems. For anyone with nostalgia for this era of platformer, or looking for something undemanding to play through on a phone via Winlator, it fits neatly.
System Requirements and Performance
| Platform | Spec Level | CPU / Processor | GPU / Graphics | RAM | OS / Environment |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| PC (Desktop) | Minimum | Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 / AMD Athlon 64 X2 | NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT / AMD Radeon HD 3850 (512 MB) | 2 GB | Windows 7 / 8 / 10 (64-bit) |
| PC (Desktop) | Recommended | Intel Core i3-2100 / AMD Phenom II X4 | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 550 Ti / AMD Radeon HD 6770 | 4 GB | Windows 10 / 11 (64-bit) |
| Android / Winlator | Minimum | Snapdragon 665 / MediaTek Helio G85 | Adreno 610 / Mali-G52 | 3 GB | Android 9+ / Winlator 7.0+ |
| Android / Winlator | Recommended | Snapdragon 778G / Dimensity 8100 | Adreno 642L / Mali-G610 | 6 GB | Android 11+ / Winlator 7.1+ |
A remastered PS2 game on a DirectX 9 renderer is about as easy as this catalogue gets. Desktop systems hold well past 60 FPS at 1080p with everything enabled. Under Winlator with Box64 and Turnip, mid-range chips maintain a locked 60 FPS at native resolution without needing any adjustment. The one thing worth doing is capping the frame rate, since the remaster’s physics and animation behave inconsistently at very high frame rates and some jumps become harder to land. Shadow quality is the only setting with meaningful cost, and even that is minor on anything from the last five years.

Final Verdict
Legend of Kay Anniversary is a solid, likeable action-platformer that never quite reaches the tier it is imitating. The three-weapon combat system is genuinely good, the wuxia-influenced world has more personality than most animal-mascot games manage, and the remaster’s visual work is a real improvement. The camera is poor, the platforming is loose, and none of the original’s rough edges were sanded down. Judged as a ten-hour throwback rather than a modern release, it is worth the time — and its light requirements make it a comfortable pick on Android through Winlator or on an older PC.
